Amazing Co Mystery Picnic Review: What You Need to Know

Recently I have been seeing the Amazing Co Mystery Picnic’s popping up in my Facebook feed.  They look like quite a fun day out and I wanted to purchase one as a gift.  But I was a little worried.  What happened if they couldn’t answer the clues? Would they get enough food to eat? What if the experience was boring?

As I couldn’t answer these questions, I moved on to pursue other ideas.  But I still wondered about the Mystery Picnics – they sounded like such fun!  So, when Amazing Co came to me to review one of their picnics I jumped at the opportunity.

Join me as I share with you my experience in this Amazing Co Mystery Picnic review.

About Amazing Co Picnics

The Amazing Co company have created mystery picnic in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the USA. Within each country, there are numerous cities that offer picnics where you solve clues to help you discover some local foodie locations to create your gourmet picnic hamper.  There are picnics for friends, and families and mystery picnic dates.

All you have to do is click on the Amazing Co website^*, look for your country and city then choose a location you would like to explore.  You can choose to purchase the picnic for yourself or as a gift.

I am based in Perth, Western Australia; our choices include options close to the city centre (where we are able to use public transport) and some are about an hour’s drive from the CBD (where you definitely need a car).  We choose to explore the region of Jarradale and Serpentine (approximately an hour’s drive from Perth).

Once you have chosen your location, you then advise if you require vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or non-alcoholic drinks for your hamper and activities.

Top Trip Tip: Check the 14-day weather forecast before locking in your dates

Getting Started on Your Mystery Picnic

A couple of days before our scheduled picnic I receive a confirmation email.  It includes a recommended start time, suggestions of what to take with us for the day and what to do before we leave home.

There is also a link to access the clues for the picnic.  Before we leave home, we complete the first clue (as suggested).  If you can’t answer any of the clues, there is a hint link and as a last resort the Reveal Button.  However, if you are heading out of town (as we did) you may find your mobile reception dwindles.  Be prepared, skip ahead to complete clues when Mystery Picnics advises you.  We even took the added precaution of screenshotting the clues, this also made it easier for all of us to read and participate in solving the clue.

Once you do solve the clue, double-check by clicking Reveal.  The answer page not only advises where you are heading but gives a brief history of the location and tells you what you should expect to collect or eg.  Choose a piece of cake each or nothing to collect here enjoy feeding the birds.

What to Take

As mentioned in your confirmation email is a brief list of things to take with you including:

  • Water
  • Cooler bag/Eski
  • Picnic crockery and cutlery
  • Pen and paper
  • Additional clothing to keep you warm
  • Install Google maps on your phone (if you haven’t already)

  • Folding chairs and table
  • Picnic blanket
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen

The Food

I have to admit one of my fears about whether I should book a mystery picnic was whether there would be a sufficient amount of food.

Let me alleviate that fear right now.  We collect so much delicious food from four different vendors.  We are still eating some of it for the next meal.  We received:

  • Soft drinks
  • Fruit salad
  • Cheeses
  • Nuts
  • Crackers
  • Chorizo
  • Bread
  • Cake

My only little complaint would be the very small side salad with the chorizo – and that’s because I love salad.

Whilst there is heaps of food, it did take us a little over two hours to collect it all.  So be prepared that you won’t be eating straight away.

Top Trip Tip: As your Amazing Co Picnic will recommend – eat a snack before heading off

Types of Activities

Part of the reason it takes a few hours to collect the food is that there are a few activities to enjoy along the way – and this is partly what is included in the price, so you want to enjoy the experience.

We get to:

  • Hand feed birds
  • Hike down to a dam
  • Partake in an extensive wine tasting

Don’t forget to take some photos along the way.  I got some lovely ones of my son relishing feeding the Australian Ringneck Parrot – commonly known as Twenty Eights.

Top Trip Tip: Wear good quality walking shoes, for the picnic location we also needed to be able-bodied – no wheelchairs or prams (though you could use a baby carrier)

Included Additional Addons

Included in your email links are a couple of additional activities – just in case.

You’ll find:

  • Road trip treasure hunt for the kids
  • Conversation starter ideas

Final Location

Our final clue provided details of our picnic location.  It was inside a national park, which if you drive into you will incur a fee.  However, the Amazing Co recommended parking outside the gate and walking 300m in to avoid the fee.

Unfortunately (for us), our picnic destination is so popular that it fills to capacity by midday on the weekends.  This means we never get to see Serpentine Falls ☹ However there are a few picnic locations back in Jarradale.

So, my suggestion to you is to double-check some reviews of your final location and look out for alternate places should the need arise.

Top Trip Tip: Enroute take note of alternate picnic locations in case your picnic location is too popular

The Verdict: Amazing Co Mystery Picnic Review

Whilst it was a little disappointing that we didn’t get to picnic at our recommended location it didn’t really detract from the otherwise entertaining afternoon.

We felt that the day was quite good value for money.  A Family Picnic is $125 AU, we believe we easily collected about $80 worth of tasty food from four vendors, plus activities like feeding the birds and wine tasting not to mention the fun experience of solving the clues.

I think the Amazing Co picnics are a great option if you are looking for a different day out, want to impress a date, looking for a unique gift experience, or want to acquaint yourself with a region and its foodie delights.
