Review of Blue Ocean Villas Kalbarri Family Accommodation
As I am planning our holiday to Kalbarri on the Coral Coast of Western Australia it takes me quite some time to search and find the perfect Kalbarri family accommodation.
I begin doing my research during April of 2020 when all the world is told to “stay at home!” But I can see a glimmer of hope in Western Australia and so I frantically begin to plan and research.
My want list includes Kalbarri accommodation with pool, BBQ, free Wifi, two bedrooms, good reviews and most importantly a decent cancellation policy should the dreaded second wave appear.
After much cross checking using my accommodation research method and worksheet (link below). Plus, lots of phone calls to each holiday apartment to review cancellation policies. I determine that the Kalbarri Blue Ocean Villas will be the best option.
So, will this holiday rental live up to all that it promises?

My Kalbarri Blue Ocean Villas Review
Blue Ocean Villas in Kalbarri offer six holiday townhouse villas for hire with four different configurations.
- Superior King: one bedroom, one bathroom, no stairs
- Deluxe King: one bedroom, one bathroom with stairs and sitting room
- Deluxe Two-Bedroom: Two bedrooms, one bathroom
- Superior Two-bedroom: Two bedrooms, two bathrooms
We opt for the deluxe two-bedroom.
The Kalbarri villas are located one block back from the beach. There are two rows of villas that are accessed via a paved driveway. We arrive after 5pm, stop in at reception to collect our key. The owners kindly advise that the IGA supermarket located across the road will close at 6pm if we need to quickly grab something for dinner.
We then drive around to find our villa number seven located at the end of the driveway.
The Two-Bedroom Deluxe Blue Ocean Villa #7
Lounge/Dining
Entering into the spacious off-white tiled lounge area there are two, two and a half seater charcoal grey couches, a square coffee table that look onto a TV with Foxtel and DVD player (BYO DVD’s).
It is all very clean, so much so that I can smell the bleach, which soon dissipates after opening all the windows to let in the cool sea breeze.
The dining space has a four-seater round pine table with grey placemats, salt and pepper grinders and a metal fruit bowl.
There is a wall mounted split system air conditioner to blow across the entire downstairs.
Kitchen
The lounge/dining area is open plan to the large kitchen. There is a full-size fridge, microwave, oven, four burner electric stove, kettle and toaster.
Inside the cream cupboards you’ll find:
- Wine and champagne glasses
- Glass tumblers and plastic cups
- Dinner plates
- Side plates
- Bowls
- Mugs
- Cutlery
The cupboards are well stocked to help you cook:
- 3 saucepans
- 2 frypans
- Utensils
- Chopping boards with sharp knives
- Grater
- Colander
- Serving plates and oven proof dishes
To keep it all clean during your stay there are two tea towels and washing up liquid
Laundry
Off the kitchen is a laundry and separate toilet.
The washing machine is cold wash only. There is one sachet of laundry powder and a basket with pegs.
You’ll also find an iron and brooms.
Courtyard
You can access the courtyard from the sliding door in the laundry or the one in the lounge. The courtyard has a green glass table and plastic green chairs. Plus, a full-size washing line.
Sitting Room
Before going upstairs there is a storage cupboard underneath, great for putting your Eski etc. out of the way. Inside this cupboard is the ironing board and a clothes horse.
Making our way up the pine staircase we reach the open carpeted sitting room. There is a patterned pull out couch and a TV. This TV does not offer the full range of stations but has kids channels and the news. To keep you cool there is a ceiling fan.
Main Bedroom
Off the sitting room are the bedrooms and bathroom.
The main bedroom has a king-size bed flanked by white and beech wood side tables with bright lamps. Towels are laid out at the end of the bed over the soft grey quilt cover. Above are a ceiling fan and an air conditioner. Across one entire wall is a wardrobe with hanging space only, but it does have spare quilts and pillows.
The large window has cream verticals and black curtains.
Top Trip Tip: Include in your packing a collapsible shelving storage*
Bedroom Two
Two single beds separated by one side table with lamp are in the compact second bedroom. Again, there is a towel at the end of each bed. Above is a ceiling fan and air conditioner. There is a small closet with hanging space only and small window with black curtains.
Bathroom
The bathroom upstairs is a good size with a long vanity bench and lots of cupboards to place your toiletries. If you have forgotten the basics there is a small selection of mini shampoo, conditioner and soap plus a hairdryer on the wall. All to use in the large standing shower.
I really like that this Kalbarri holiday accommodation includes face washes (so many don’t), hand towels and bathmat.
Amenities and Facilities
WiFi and Foxtel
Each of these Kalbarri apartments has unlimited WiFi and Foxtel TV.
Parking
They also have one undercover car bay. There are additional bays near the street driveway entrance.
Storage
At the rear of the carport is a storage area that can opened via the courtyard. Great for keeping bikes, surf boards or fishing equipment safe.
Pool
At the end of the complex is a sparkling blue solar heated pool surrounded by terracotta pavers. I quite enjoy sitting under the blue gazebo at the four-seater table whilst I watch my son play in the pool. Alternately I could lay on one of the three dark rattan sun loungers.
Top Trip Tip: You need to pack your own beach towel
BBQ
Tucked to the side of the driveway is a clean double stainless-steel gas BBQ. There is a table and chairs to relax as you cook your feast.
Everybody is encouraged to clean up after themselves as a small bucket, sponges and paper towels are hanging next to the BBQ with instructions on how to clean it.

Website
Last year we booked our stay directly through the website. However, at the time of our stay, the owners were in the process of selling each villa individually. The villas are now available for rent via:
- Kalbarri Accommodation Services is not the easiest website to navigate, but if you click pool properties the Blue Ocean Villas will be in the selection on the first page
- Through an accommodation booking site like Wotif*. I would suggest searching each villa individually “Kalbarri Blue Ocean Villa #number from 2-7”. This is the link to Villa 7 where we stayed
- Alternatively, call 089937 0400 or email [email protected]
Location
Kalbarri is 570km north of Perth, Western Australia
The Blue Ocean Villas are located one block back from the beach at 22 Mortimer Street Kalbarri. It is easy an walk to many of the local attractions and facilities from the main beach front street – Grey Street.
Nearby Attractions and Facilities
IGA
The local IGA supermarket is located directly across the road from the villas and has a good range of produce.

Continuing to walk seven minutes north and you will reach the jetty for departures on boat tours like:
Throughout the morning next to the jetty, you can buy fresh fish and seafood from the local fisherman. And across the road is the Jetty Seafood Shack which serves good fish and chips.

The pelican feeding is one of the more popular tourist attractions. From the villas walk south along the coast for about five minutes to the dedicated feeding station. Pelican feeding is at 8:45am.
Beach and Boat Hire
All the coastline along Kalbarri has pristine white sandy beaches. Near the pelican feeding and car park you will find the boat hire centre. Where you can play out on the water on kayaks, stand up paddle boards, row boats and peddle boats. This is also the departure point for the Kalbarri Canoe Safari
Kalbarri Visitor Centre
A very short walk further south is the Kalbarri Visitor Centre which you will want to pop into if you haven’t pre-booked any tours.
Top Trip Tip: Do this on day one of your stay to prevent the disappointment of not getting on your preferred tours or pre-book tours online*

What to Pack for Kalbarri
Whilst Kalbarri is north of Perth it is usually only a few degrees warmer and once the sea breeze comes in each afternoon it can get quite chilly even in summer.
You’ll want to include these essentials in your packing:
- Good quality walking shoes
- Beachwear
- Sun protection
- Something to keep you warm
As this is a self-contained apartment you will possibly want to pack your own food to save on costs. To help you get started with planning your meals, shopping and packing use the Self Catering Holiday Packing List.

The Verdict
We really enjoyed our stay at the Kalbarri Blue Ocean Villas. Villa #7 is spacious, a well-equipped kitchen, provides lots of amenities including unlimited WiFi and Foxtel, is centrally located, has a great pool and clean BBQ’s.
The only thing I’ve noticed since we travelled and booked directly through Kalbarri Ocean Blue Villas with the previous owners is the cancellation policy. The previous owners were very considerate, taking just our credit card details but not charging until our stay. Now it appears bookings are partially or fully non-refundable (depending on who you book through) and you cannot alter your dates if you do need to cancel. And whilst I cannot fault this accommodation and our experience, this is something to be wary of as we progress through 2021.
However, with all the little extras that were provided and the fact it was spotlessly clean ensures that this is one Kalbarri’s luxury accommodations.
If you do decide to stay here, I’d love to hear about your experience. Please share them with me in the comments.
